MERI - What we do and how we work
What we do
We at MERI elaborate highly specialized solutions for industry in the areas of environmental technology and recycling to secure long-term sustainability and profitability of our customers in upgrade or green-field projects worldwide, for example:- Advanced transportation and material solutions for raw materials and residuals, which are used in or occur in industrial processes
- Recycling, handling and conditioning of rejects and residuals from industrial production including all process technologies to recycle and reuse valuable material streams and prepare them for further reuse
- Waste to Energy processes, which re-condition residuals from industrial production with different technologies and thus allow the stable use as “replacement fuel” in incineration power plants
- Fresh water preparation and conditioning to provide process water for industrial processes
- Internal clarification of process water streams to allow the reuse of water and to reduce the specific water consumption of the industrial process
- Effluent treatment including primary, secondary and tertiary treatment using chemical/physical treatment combined with aerobic and anaerobic biological processes, which secure the lowest energy consumption and the generation of valuable biogas
- Sludge treatment and conditioning for all kinds of sludge from industrial processes or effluent and waste treatment operations
How we work
Regardless of whether we work for an upgrade project or brand-new greenfield installations, the base is always a detailed analyses of process requirements, pre-conditions (logistic, legal, environmental etc.) and the respective economic aspects (OPEX, TCI/O, ROI) using our experience and expert engineering methods. As a result, we present to our customer integrated solutions out of one hand with the necessary flexibility, which allows the best possible project team work including partial local services.
In general, the key process equipment – based on our experience of more than 3000 installed and successfully operating machines worldwide is supplied by MERI. It is custom designed and engineered to the needs of our customers. As far as possible the equipment is manufactured locally under the control of MERI allowing the best value and quality.
MERI – Our Customers
Our customers operate industrial plants ranging from medium size to large scale. This requires continuous 24/7 operation all year round and generates continuous output. For the Paper Industry we have supplied many hundreds of installations and thousands of types of equipment, which for years have successfully fulfilled the technical and operational requirements in this demanding Industry.
Many installations have been done as well in other industries such as Liquid Food, Wood Compensate, Plastic and Composite Recycling among many others.
We serve our customers since 25 years
MERI – History
2013 | With the experience of more than 3000 installed equipment and more than 200 successfully operating subsystems MERI sets benchmarks worldwide in the area of water and waste water, sludge, reject and residual treatment providing customized environmental solutions for many industries. Recycling, up-cycling and Waste to Energy solutions from MERI procure additional economic benefits for industrial customers. |
2012 | MERI onstalls new systems with the Smart Pocket Conveyor. This advanced transportation technology allows complex routing, with curves, inclinations and multiple feed and discharge points as well as the transport of different materials in the same conveyor with the lowest energy consumption. |
2010 | MERI successfully installs in the USA several effluent treatment plants in the paper industry with high rate anaerobic reactors, which convert the COD load into biogas and set a new benchmark in the industry |
2009 | MERI installs in the USA the biggest plastic recycling plant which up-cycles 250 t/day of plastic foils from agricultural, automotive and food industry to be used as extruded granulate for water proof MDF deck woods and other construction materials. |
2007 | MERI installs the first “Waste to Energy” plant in the paper industry which up-cycles aprox. 450 t/day reject, residuals and sludge from paper mills to replacement fuel and feeds a 40 MW (term.) incineration plant. |
2006 | As WSR technology and environmental interfaces for industrial production plants gain importance VOITH increases shareholding to 50 plus % with MERI and furthermore establishes the new “Voith Paper Environmental Solutions Business Unit” which invests and develops solutions in anaerobic biological waste water treatment and new material handling technologies. MERI takes over the responsibility for anaerobic wastewater technology and material handling for all markets in North & South America. |
2002 | Integrated WSR Subsystem Technology (Water, Sludge, Reject) is leading “state of the art” technology for environmental interfaces of new “greenfield” board and packaging and recycled graphic paper mills – MERI delivers WSR out of one hand for all leading customers worldwide. |
2000 | Installation of key technology & modules for the world’s first plastic waste recycling plant (Yellow Sack) presented at World Expo Hannover 2000 which up-cycles municipal waste to re-usable fibers and plastic. |
1999 | Introduction of “Meri Millenium Product Line” with further improved equipment and the concept to allow fully modular manufacturing of machine modules in different places, to allow local manufacturing as far as possible. |
1998 | First tests and small installation to generate “replacement fuel” from rejects and residuals in a German recycled paper mill, further enlargement of MERI product line. |
1997 | Establishment of Meri Sistemas e Tecnologia Ltda. in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to cover the markets in South America and allow local service and manufacturing of the MERI product line. |
1995 | Meri Entsorgungstechnik GmbH is established as new 50/50 joint venture between VOITH and Meri Holding. Meri Entsorgungstechnik GmbH enlarges the portfolio for all WSR – Water Sludge Reject Subsystem applications and gets Center of Competence within VOITH Paper. |
1994 | Meri opens first office in the USA to better serve the US market needs with more DIP plants and requirements for lower specific water consumption. |
1992 | After several successful installations in Europe MERI installs equipment in North and South America and Asia. In addition to applications in the paper industry several installations in the milk (dairy) and petro chemical industry are executed. |
1989 | MERI has been founded by a small group of engineers in Munich, Germany; highly specialized in the chemical/physical separation technology using DAF technology for the removal of colloidal contaminants from water loops. |
Basics of Technology
Water is the basic transport media among the process steps within the pulp & paper industry and plays an important role in other industries as well. As the costs for fresh water consumption and waste water discharge are continuously increasing, water management becomes an increasingly important environmental and economical issue.
Sludge is generated in different process steps: treatment or clarification of water, separation of small inorganic matter, removal of ink, soil, or other disturbing material from the production process. Sludge typically appears in viscous condition and consists mainly of water. Therefore, proper dewatering is essential for the economical handling and ecological disposal of sludge.
Reject is a critical issue, especially in the recycling business, making up a significant portion of the raw material that is used for production, and is characterized by the extreme variations of its properties, ranging from plastic wrappings or styrofoam to sand, stones or metal. Reject dewatering is as important as the separation into different fractions in order to allow disposal or recycling at minimized cost and environmental impact.
Meri, the number 1 supplier in the paper industry for integrated solutions for Water, Sludge and Reject (WSR - Subsystems) out of one hand.
